  • Early on most students in church schools were sons of nobles who studied for the clergy
  • 1200s= universities
- astronomy, math, music, grammar, rhetoric: study of persuasive writing and speaking
  • Books were handcopied= rare
  • Aristotle
- logical thinking was the pathto knowledge
  • Thomas Aquinas
- gave reason to the Bible
- theology and philosophy
- natural law stated that there is order behind moral guidance
  • Church later accepted his teachings

3.8 Monks, Nuns, and Mendicants

- The Monastic Way of Life
  • Monks = Men who joined monasterie s
- Lived by Monasticism
- Monasticism = A way in life in witch men and woman withdraw from the rest of the world to devote themselves to there faith.
- Monks spent their lives in prayer, study, and work
  • Nuns
- One of the few ways for woman who did not wish to get maried to keep from geting maried.
- woman who became nuns grew up in nunneries
- nuns performed many of the same types of work monks do.
  • Bolth nuns and monks joined religous orders
- relgious orders = A brotherhood or a sisterhood of monks, nuns, or friars.
- Each order had its own distintive rules and forms of service.
-The Monasteries
  • Laid out along a cloister, a covered walkway surounding a square
  • Library writing room called scriptorium
- Monks made Illuminated Manuscripts here
- Illuminated Manuscipts = A book decorated with bright colors and preciousmetals.
- Mendicants
  • people wanted to live without seclusion of the monastic orders
  • Friars traveled among the coman people to preach and care for the poor and sick
- Called mendicants whitch means beggar.
